Does your garage door sound like it’s going to jump off the tracks every time it opens and closes? Whatever is making you jump every time the door is opened, it is best to have it checked out and fix it before it gets worse and something bad happens.
So what’s making all that noise?
Garage doors are inherently a little noisy, but there is a difference between standard operational noise and a malfunctioning door. Your garage door is made up of a series of moving parts, gears and pulleys so there are a number of things that can be causing your door to make so much noise. Some new garage doors and automatic garage door openers can be surprisingly noisy when they are new, it just depends on the model and how it was installed.
One of the most common reasons for excess noise is friction. When your garage door parts age they have less lubrication and the components begin to rub against each other creating friction noise. Bolts can become loose, some parts may wear out and tracks can lose their alignment. Any of these things can stem from normal wear and tear, making your garage door sound louder. Many of these types of problems may be more noisy than serious but with some older doors and openers or systems that have sustained damage, they will need to be addressed more quickly before they can become a safety concern.
If you are thinking of fixing the problem yourself, it isn’t recommended unless you know what you’re doing. Using the wrong lubricant can create more problems. Additionally, WD-40 is not recommended because it attracts dirt and it can drip onto your car. Checking bolts and screws to make sure they aren’t loose is a good practice but be careful not to over tighten or strip them.
When to call a professional garage door repair technician
You should call if you’re unsure of what you’re doing or if a part needs to be replaced. If you have a door that is more than 20 years old and starting to give you problems or make a lot of noise it may be best to have it replaced. The modern garage doors and openers are much quieter and are built to a higher set of standards than the older ones.
